K-Rino “Cartoon Orgie“
A couple mentions of K-Rino on Twitter led me to revisit the one album I actually have of his, Stories From The Black Book. I downloaded it after hearing his scene-stealing verse on “Who Are They” off Scarface’s Emeritus. Apparently, he’s one of the forefathers of Houston rap and it shows. The production is pretty primitive, sharing a lot in common with early Geto Boys but then also showing glimpses of Public Enemy, Bomb Squad-type chaos. K-Rino’s lyricism is top-notch though and surprisingly diverse. Mostly, he tells awesome hood fables but he mixes it up with Wu-style metaphorical spit here and there.
Anyway, this track is classic, reminding me of Scarface’s “Cereal Killer” or even moreso, Ice Cube’s “A Gangsta’s Fairytale” (though I think “Cereal Killer” came after this, so this track might actually be the inspiration for Scarface’s). It takes all these characters from your childhood and puts them in a gangsterfied context. It’s unsettling but pretty hilarious to hear about Gumbi using Plastic Man as a condom to sex up on Wonder Woman’s STD-infected skins.
